Dr. Troy Comi

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Troy received his B.S. from the University of Arizona in chemistry, computer science, mathematics, biochemistry and cellular biology while researching enzyme encapsulation strategies within porous phospholipid nanoshells with Prof. Craig Aspinwall.

As a graduate student at the University of Illinois, Troy started working with Prof. Richard Perry on development of instrumental modifications and data anlysis workflows for improving desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry on an Orbitrap mass analyzer. In 2014, Troy joined Prof. Jonathan Sweedler’s group, focusing on developing software for performing high throughput single cell analysis by MALDI-ToF MS. As many natural processes and disease states involve changes at the resolution of individual cells, the ability to monitor chemical phenotypes is becoming more instrumental in fundamental and applied biology.

Troy is currently a postdoctoral associate in Prof. Bhargava’s group where he hopes to transition 3D printing with carbohydrate glass into development of artificial tumors and organs. Recapitulating the tumor microenvironment requires novel fabrication and cell culturing methods but will provide access to a controllable experimental environment and reproducible target for characterizing imaging methods developed throughout CISL.
